There are different kinds of insurances one has to be aware of legally and privately. Its good for people coming from different worlds where insurances doesn't play much role in lives or are not legally obliged.
Krankenversicherung - Health Insurance Health insurance is mandatory for anyone livign in Germany, be it for student or visit or employment. The premiums vary from the status. Students pay low premium while employees pay a percentage of their gross salary. Pflegeversicherung - Nursing Insurance This is usually stays along with health insurance. Employees can see they pay some %age from their salary to this. Rentenversicherung - Retirement Insurance/Scheme This is the retirement insurance paid by the employer and employee. Employee part can be claimed back if one leaves the country and the destination country has no compatibility with EU or german pension system. eg: countries like China, India etc.. Arbeitslosenversicherung - Unemployment Insurance Paid also from the salary and covers during job loss. This is a unique feature in Germany. Privathaftpflichtversicherung - Personal Liability Insurance It covers the costs of damages incured by you. eg: You hit your neighbour's car by accident , or damage others property. Rechtschutzversicherung - Legal Insurance This is really important if you are a tenant and rent a house here. This covers the costs for lawyer fees during disputes and court cases. You can be any , defendant or claimant. Hausratversicherung Household Insurance to cover your personal belongings during fire or theft etc. Krankenkasse - is a health insurance company This is the german term used for the health insurance company. It is recommended to have the following insurances apart from the mandatory insurances to save trouble and money. They should cost less than 200 to 250 euros per year.
